In the [d] merry (C) month of [d] May from my home I started,
[d] Left the (C) girls of [d] Tuam - [C] nearly broken-hearted,
Sal[d]uted (C)Father [d] dear, kissed my darlin’ Mother,
[d] Drank a (C) pint of [d] beer my [C] grief and tears to smother,
Then [d] off to reap the [C] corn, and [d] leave where I was [C] born,
I [d] cut a stout black[C]thorn to banish ghost and goblin,
In a [d] brand-new pair of [C] brogues I [d] rattled o’er the [C] bogs,
And [d] frightened all the [C] dogs on the rocky road to Dublin.
(A) One, two, (C) three, four (d) five

[d] hunt the hare and turn her, Down the rocky road
and [C] all the ways to Dublin, [a] Whack fol- [C] lol-de-[d]ra.

In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary,
Started by daylight next morning light and airy,
Took a drop of the pure, to keep my heart from sinking,
That’s a Paddy’d cure, whene’er he’s on for drinking,
To see the lasses smile, laughing all the while,
At me curious style, ‘twould set your heart a-bubbling,
They ax’d if I was hired, the wages I required,
Till I was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five

In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity,
To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city,
Then I took a stroll out among the quality,
My bundle it was stole in a neat locality;
Something crossed me mind, then I looked behind,
No bundle could I find upon me stick a-wobblin’,
Enquiring after the rogue, they said me Connaught brogue,
Wasn’t much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five

From there I got away me spirits never failing,
Landed on the quay as the ship was sailing,
Captain at me roared, said that no room had he,
When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy,
Down among the pigs, I played some funny rigs,
Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubblin’,
When off to Holyhead I wished meself was dead,
Or better far, instead, on the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five

The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed,
Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it;
Me blood began to boil, temper I was losin’,
Poor old Erin’s isle they began abusin’,
“Hurrah my soul!” says I, my shillelagh I let fly,
Some Galway boys came by, saw I was a hobblein’,
Then with a loud Hurray, they joined in the affray,
We quickly cleared the way, for the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five

A [e] blacksmith courted [D] me, nine [e] months and [D] bet [e] ter
he [e] fairly won my [D] heart, he wrote [e] me a [D] let [e] ter
with his [G] hammer [A] in his [e] hand, he looked quite cle [D] ver
and if [e] I were with my love, I’d [e] live [D] for [e] ever

But where is my love gone, with his cheeks like roses?
and his good black billy cock gun decked around with primroses?
I’m afraid the scorching sun will shine and burn his beauty
and if I were with my love, I’d do my duty

Strange news is come to town, strange news is carried
stange news flies up and down that my love is married
I wish them both much joy though they can’t hear me
and may God reward him well for this slighting of me

Don’t you remember when you lay beside me,
you said you’d marry me and ne’er deny me
if I said I’d marry, it was only for to try you
so bring your witness love and I’ll not deny you

Oh, witness have I none save God almighty
and may he reward you well for the slighting of me
her lips grew pale and wan, it made her poor heart tremble
to think she loved a one and he proved deceitful

Black Is The Colour (Christy Moore – Version)

[b] Black is the [G] colour [A] of my true love’s [b] hair
Her lips are [G] like [A] some roses [b] fair
She has the sweetest [G] smile [A] and the gentelest [b] hands
And I love the [G] ground [A] whereon she [b] stands

I love my love and well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes
I wish the day it soon would come
When she and I could be as one

I go to the clyde, and I mourn and weep
For satisfied I never can be
I wrote her a letter, just a few short lines
And suffer death for a thousand times

For black is the colour of my true love’s hair
Her lips are like some roses fair
She has the sweetest smile and the gentlest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Black Is The Colour (Alternativer Text)

Black Is The Colour (alternativ)
I go to the clyde for to mourn and weep
But satisfied I never can sleep
I’ll write to you in a few short lines
And suffer death ten thousand times

I know my love and well she knows
I love the grass whereon she goes
If she on earth no more I see
My life will quickly fade away

A winter’s past and the leaves are green
The time has past that we have seen
But still I hope the time will come
When you and I will be as one

So fare you well, my own true love
The time has passed, but I wish you well
But still I hope the time will come
When yoz and I will be as one

I love my love my love, and well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes
The prettiest face and the neatest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Black is the colour of my true love’s hair
Her lips are like some rosy fair
The purest eyes and the neatest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Oh [a] canst thou see, yon [d] little turtledove
Sitting [a] under a [e] mulberry [a] tree
See [a] how that [e] she doth [F] mourn for her true [C] love
As [F] I shall [C] mourn for [G] thee, my dear
And fare thee well for a while
Butthough I go, I’ll surely come again
If it takes ten thousand mile my dear
If it take ten thousand mile

The thousand mile is very far away
For you to return to me
You leave me here to lament and well-a-day
My tears you will not see, my love
My tears you will not see

The crow that’s black, my little turtledove
Shall change its colour to white
Before I’m false to the maiden that I love
The noon-day shall be night, my dear
The noon-day shall be night

The hills shall fly, my little turtledove
The roaring billows burn
Before my heart shall suffer me to fail
Or I a traitor turn, my dear
Or I a traitor turn
