When [C] apples still [G] grow in No[C]vember
When [F] blossoms still [C] bloom on each [G] tree
When [F] leaves are still green in de[C]cember
It’s [G] then that our land will be [a] free
I [F] wandered her hills and her [C] valleys
And [F] still through my sorrow I [G] see
A [F] land that has never known [C] freedom
And [G] only our rivers run [a] free

I drink to the death of her manhood
Those men who would rather have died
Than to live in the cold chains of bondage
To bring back their rights once denied
Oh where are you now that we need you
What burns where the flame used to be
Are you gone like the snows of last winter
And will only our rivers run free

How sweet is the life but were crying
How mellow the wine but we’re dry
How fragrant the rose but it’s dying
How gentle the wind but it sighs
What good is in youth when it’s aging
What joy is in eyes that can’t see
When there’s sorrow in sunshine and flowers
And still only our rivers run free

As [e] I went a [D] walking way [e] down by the [b] greenwood
[G] Down where the [D] ivy and [e] laurel [b] entwine
I [G] heard a bird [D] singing a [e] sad, plaintive [b] love song
He [e] mourned for his [b] true love as [e] I mourned for mine

[G] Ever the [D] winds keep on [e] changing their [b] journey
[G] Ever the waves keep on [e] changing the [b] sea
[G] Ever green [D] summer keeps [e] changing to [b] autumn
My [e] true love has [b] changed, but there’s [e] no change in me

I brought my love flowers all tied up with ribbons
Soon the sweet flowers were faded and gone
Like the flowers, my true love’s affections have withered
Which leaves me alone here to pine and to mourn

My constant companions are sadness and sorrow
Trouble has never forsaken me yet
But wherever I go ’til my days are all numbered
The love of my soul, I will never forget

Bin gestern über dieses wunderschöne Lied von Tommy Makem gestolpert und musste es direkt mal posten. Die Chords folgen auf jeden Fall noch :)

[a] We got torn from our roots
And [C] without a choice we’re [e] here
We’re the [a] lucky country,
No [C] fighting no war and no [e] fear
And we’re [C] reminded of how we [G] brutally stole this [e] land
But there’s [C] no one to blame
Cause [a] everyone’s the same in this [e] town

Sister would you take a bullet for me?
And brother would you risk your life for family?

And we try to have culture
To teach our children
But we forget what to say
So we talk mundane
And we walk the same in this land

There’s a message in this
Of how we exist
Empty, lost and cold
And we hear our hearts
And feel our souls
But every time we’re near
We get sucked to the ground
By the lifeless sounds
In this land

So what have we learnt
With our heritage burnt
And our memory slowly fades
Tears burning our eyes
As we hear the lies
From the cradle to the grave

And does it feel like death
When you know you’re mislead
And your children are lead astray
So if we don’t start now
Then they’ll never know how
And we’ll fade away

From this land

Son wipe the tears from your sisters eyes
Bes strong my son wipe the tears
From your sisters eye…

[d] Kilkelly, Ireland, [F] 18 and 60, my [C] dear and loving son [d] John
Your good friend the schoolmaster [F] Pat McNamara’s so [C] good
As to write these words [d] down.
[F] Your brothers have all gone to [C] find work in England,
The [A#] house is so empty and [a] sad
The [d] crop of potatoes is [F] sorely infected,
A [C] third to a half of them [d] bad.
And [F] your sister Brigid and [C] Patrick O’Donnell
Are [A#] going to be married in [a] June.
Your [d] mother says not to [F] work on the railway
And [C] be sure to come on home [d] soon.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 18 and 70, my dear and loving son John
Hello to your Mrs and to your 4 children,
And may they grow healthy and strong.
Our Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble,
I suppose that he never will learn.
Because of the dampness there’s no turf to speak of
And now we have nothing to burn.
But Brigid is happy, you named a child for her
You know she’s got six of her own.
You say you found work, but you don’t say
What kind or when you will be coming home.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 18 and 80, dear Michael and John, my dear sons
I’m sorry to give you the very sad news
Your mother passed on
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly,
Your brothers and Brigid were there.
You don’t have to worry, she died very quickly,
Remember her in your prayers.
And it’s so good to hear that Michael’s returning,
With money he’s sure to buy land
For the crop has been poor and the people
Are selling any price that they can.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 18 and 90, my dear and loving son John
I guess that I must be close on to eighty,
It’s thirty years you’ve been gone.
Because of all of the money you send me,
I’m still living out on my own.
Michael has built himself a fine house
And Brigid’s daughters have grown.
And thank you for sending your family picture,
They’re lovely young women and men.
You say that you might even come for a visit,
What joy to see you again.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 18 and 92, my dear brother John
I’m sorry I didn’t write sooner to tell you that father passed on.
He was living with Brigid, she says he was cheerful
And healthy right down to the end.
Ah, you should have seen him play with
The grandchildren of Pat McNamara, your friend.
And we buried him alongside of mother,
Down at the Kilkelly churchyard.
He was a strong and a feisty old man,
Considering his life was so hard.
And it’s funny the way he kept talking about you,
He called for you in the end.
Oh, why don’t you think about coming to visit,
We’d all love to see you again.

Black Is The Colour (Christy Moore – Version)

[b] Black is the [G] colour [A] of my true love’s [b] hair
Her lips are [G] like [A] some roses [b] fair
She has the sweetest [G] smile [A] and the gentelest [b] hands
And I love the [G] ground [A] whereon she [b] stands

I love my love and well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes
I wish the day it soon would come
When she and I could be as one

I go to the clyde, and I mourn and weep
For satisfied I never can be
I wrote her a letter, just a few short lines
And suffer death for a thousand times

For black is the colour of my true love’s hair
Her lips are like some roses fair
She has the sweetest smile and the gentlest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Black Is The Colour (Alternativer Text)

Black Is The Colour (alternativ)
I go to the clyde for to mourn and weep
But satisfied I never can sleep
I’ll write to you in a few short lines
And suffer death ten thousand times

I know my love and well she knows
I love the grass whereon she goes
If she on earth no more I see
My life will quickly fade away

A winter’s past and the leaves are green
The time has past that we have seen
But still I hope the time will come
When you and I will be as one

So fare you well, my own true love
The time has passed, but I wish you well
But still I hope the time will come
When yoz and I will be as one

I love my love my love, and well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes
The prettiest face and the neatest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Black is the colour of my true love’s hair
Her lips are like some rosy fair
The purest eyes and the neatest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands

Oh [a] canst thou see, yon [d] little turtledove
Sitting [a] under a [e] mulberry [a] tree
See [a] how that [e] she doth [F] mourn for her true [C] love
As [F] I shall [C] mourn for [G] thee, my dear
As [C] I shall [e] mourn for [a] thee

So fare thee well, my little turtledove
And fare thee well for a while
Butthough I go, I’ll surely come again
If it takes ten thousand mile my dear
If it take ten thousand mile

The thousand mile is very far away
For you to return to me
You leave me here to lament and well-a-day
My tears you will not see, my love
My tears you will not see

The crow that’s black, my little turtledove
Shall change its colour to white
Before I’m false to the maiden that I love
The noon-day shall be night, my dear
The noon-day shall be night

The hills shall fly, my little turtledove
The roaring billows burn
Before my heart shall suffer me to fail
Or I a traitor turn, my dear
Or I a traitor turn
